Through wilderness skills, creative arts and the exhilaration of outdoor fun and discovery, Green River Preserve Mentor Naturalists lead and teach challenging and nurturing learning experiences at this 3,400-acre private wildlife preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the late spring and summer/fall school programs. Summer job opportunities include Mentors, Cabin Counselors, Activity Leaders, Expedition Leaders, Program Interns (Summer Camp, Education, Expeditions, Farming and Land Management), Nurses and a Camp Nanny. Trails Carolina is nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, offering year-round moderate temperatures, long sunny days, and beautiful rolling mountains. When on wilderness expeditions, students experience breath-taking natural terrain including waterfalls, towering hardwood forests and elevations surpassing 5,000 feet.

Program in the Spotlight Trails Carolina is a therapeutic wilderness program offering a unique combination of backcountry expedition and base camp programming to help troubled teens reach their full potential. Wilderness Field Instructors play an integral role in the healing process, leading youth through a powerful journey of self-discovery as they engage in a wide variety of activities:

+ Therapeutic work with horses to teach communication skills

Program in the Spotlight The National Center for Outdoor & Adventure Education (NCOAE) is a values-based outdoor adventure and education provider for teens and adults interested in personal growth and professional development. NCOAE develops and facilitates professionally guided outdoor experiences that foster an engaged educational community through personal growth and the acquisition of technical and academic skills. Field Instructors are responsible for leading multi-day outdoor adventure courses including, backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, mountaineering, and backcountry camping.  Instructors must be committed to contributing to each participants' interpersonal, academic and leadership development and invested in creating a positive impact. Additional duties include leading lessons, facilitating group processing, managing risks, and setting a safe, fun, and engaging tone. Compensation based on experience. Starting pay ranges from $75-$100/day with opportunities for advancement. Staff housing and other stipends are available. Satisfactory completion of staff training is required prior to employment. Adventure Treks operates 13- to 30-day summer and semester-long wilderness-based programs in British Columbia, Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, and North Carolina.

Being an outdoor instructor at Adventure Treks is an incredible opportunity—seeing students immersed in nature, fostering a community and building their confidence and leadership on the trail! Instructors know the demands of operating on the sun's clock and sleeping in a tent for weeks at a time with peers and students that rely on them. In the highs and lows of a trip, they're always engaged, bringing fun to any situation, staying motivated, and working hard. Instructors are in charge of safety, satisfaction, and success. It's not always easy, but it's so rewarding! Instructors lead activities like backpacking, rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, canoeing, whitewater kayaking, and whitewater rafting. On each adventure, the five- to six-person instructor team works together to coordinate all aspects of the trip like managing group dynamics, teaching outdoor skills, maintaining equipment, and handling medical issues. A 60% instructor retention rate is in part due to their competitive salary, benefits and opportunities to work the summer, Leadership Adventure Semesters, and fall educational programs. Serving youth and young adults ages 8-24 with ADHD and other learning disabilities, SOAR's adventure-based programs provide academic instruction, experiential education, and life skills development.

SOAR has three course locations: Balsam Base, NC (most programming occurs in nearby Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests), Eagle View Ranch, WY (while on base, you will stay in outfitter-style shelters and tipis that are electricity free), and the Florida Keys (The campsite is located in the Spanish Harbor Channel and all SCUBA programs are facilitated here). Staff members are initially slated for one of these primary course areas, but you could potentially be asked to work on any course in any area.

Have fun. Be a leader. Change a life. Find adventure. Make a difference. SOAR is an adventure summer camp camp for youth and young adults diagnosed with ADHD and other learning differences. Adventure Camp Staff & Interns will lead campers as they are challenged in a variety of adventure activities (backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, and more), and pushed beyond their comfort zone with support and encouragement. These experiences empower the campers to be strength focused, learn more about themselves, overcome challenges, and relate lessons learned from these experiences to other aspects of their lives. Adventure Camp Staff & Interns supervise a group of 6 to 8 students (2 staff per group), for 24 hours a day, on 10 to 18-day courses, demonstrate sound and safe decision making, facilitate adventure-based expeditions, the development of life skills, organizational skills, self-esteem, problem-solving strategies, communication techniques, and social skills, and act as a role model for campers by demonstrating maturity, responsibility, good organizational skills, professional behavior and fun! Working at SOAR will allow you to grow and learn with campers in ways that you never thought possible. 2022 positions are available from mid-May to mid-August, with varying start/end dates based on location. Benefits include compensation starting at $3,500 (additional pay DOE), plus room and board, and free WFA, CPR and Lifeguard certifications. If you are hard-working, extremely patient, competent in outdoor and backpacking skills, love kids, and have experience working with children with learning differences, complete the online staff application.

Located an hour from Asheville and Charlotte, with charming "Main Street" towns fifteen minutes away. Just a half hour to swimming holes and hiking in South Mountain State Park or Chimney Rock. The farm grows Certified Organic vegetables and fruit, as well as pasture-raised pork for sale through farmers' market and CSA. This commercial production is integral to a broader permaculture design and land revitalization, including the development of fruit and nut orchards (persimmon, pawpaw, muscadines, chestnuts, pecans, and apples).

Ready to dig deeper into your farming experience? The A Way of Life Farm apprenticeship offers an opportunity to delve deep into farming for those pursuing a farming career. Farm Apprentices take part in various aspects of the farm, from vegetable seed to harvest, livestock chores, soil health and revitalization, marketing, and perennials; but should expect to spend the vast majority of time growing vegetables and gaining responsibilities in various aspects of production. Applicants should have good communication skills and self-motivation. Some previous experience on a commercial farm is highly recommended and experience with physical labor or intense outdoor activity is important. Full season apprentices work 40-50 hours/week from February/March to mid-December and receive a monthly stipend starting at $700/month, housing in a personal tiny home (with electricity, cold water, propane cooking appliances) and shared outhouse, hot shower and washing machine, vegetables and meat from the farm, food staples, and participation in monthly CRAFT farm tours. Summer interns work 40 hours/week from May/June to August/September and receive a monthly stipend of $500 and housing in a camper trailer with all other amenities listed above. Spanning 220 acres in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordered on three sides by the 450,000-acres of Pisgah National Forest. You'll find over 100 waterfalls alone in their county. Elevation and geographical location allow for warm summer days, plentiful rainfall and cool nights.

Camp Carolina is an all boys camp that offers a balanced mixture of individual and team sports, nature, music, arts and crafts, high adventure and extreme sports. Summer Camp Staff include Cabin and Head Counselors, In-Camp and Head Activity Counselors, and Adventure Activity Counselors (plan and teach one or more high adventure activities such as rock climbing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, horseback riding, surfing, wake boarding, sea kayaking, fly fishing, backpacking—and so many more!) and Kitchen and Maintenance staff. Located on the Neuse River (which has the largest mouth of any river in the U.S. being six miles long!), Don Lee Camp & Retreat Center hosts the Coastal Communities residential environmental education program focusing on hands-on experiences in coastal ecology, marine sciences and natural history as well as the Common Ground challenge course designed to build community and encourage teamwork. There are many opportunities for recreational activities in the area, including surfing, fishing, kayaking, sailing, camping and the beach! You will be visited by dolphins, rays and River Otters on a daily basis.

Environmental Educators will teach a variety of outdoor exploration programs and activities—from ocean study and chart navigation to fishing, sailing and caring for captive animals. Educators will also double as Challenge Course Facilitators, providing team building, problem-solving and experiential learning. 2022 positions are available during the spring (February 28th-May 27th, with a summer camp option) and fall season (September 6th-November 18th). Compensation includes a salary of $275/week (Interns earn $225/week), shared rooms in staff housing, all meals prepared by dining hall staff and WiFi access. Since 1991, Kanuga's Mountain Trail Outdoor School has taught experiential outdoor education in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

Mountain Trail Outdoor School is a residential environmental education program serving students (typically in the 4th-8th grade) from both public and private schools from around the southeast. The 1,400-acre property has a diverse ecosystem ranging from streams and lakes to mountains and forest.

Mountain Trail Outdoor School is seeking enthusiastic Instructors who enjoy working with youth and have a desire to teach in an outdoor setting. Responsibilities include teaching outdoor environment classes (ranging from a science curriculum that meets state standards to team building exercises and adventure-based programming), developing curricula and resources for the program, assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of campus teaching, habitat, and resource storage areas, completing projects assigned by faculty supervisors, and actively participating in the broader Kanuga community when opportunities arise. Positions are available during the fall (mid-August to November) and spring (late February to May). Compensation includes $295/week (more DOE), onsite room and board, a comprehensive two-week paid training period, and professional development Incentives. MTOS will also work with interns wishing to receive college credit while working with the outdoor school. Located four miles south of Brevard and set among the fantastic beauty of the Carolina Appalachian mountains with numerous waterfalls and scenic overlooks within its 215-acre wooded location. The Camp is about 30 minutes from the Asheville Regional Airport, about 2 ½ hours to Charlotte, NC, and 3 hours to Atlanta, GA.

Since 1921, Rockbrook Camp for Girls has been a place where girls ages 6-16 can experience the wonder and excitement of a summer in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Summer camp jobs include 60 cabin counselors as well as other day staff, nurses, and program staff. Cabin counselors will live with and supervise a small group of girls, participate in general camp programs, provide leadership and instruction in one or more specific camp activities (24 different options), and be a positive role model. Counselors specializing in climbing, hiking/backpacking and paddling counselors will plan, organize and lead out-of-camp trips. The Sound to Sea Environmental Education Program is a secular program of Trinity Center, the camp and conference center of East Carolina's Episcopal Diocese.

Sound to Sea, Trinity Center's Environmental Education program on North Carolina's Southern Outer Banks is situated on a 62-acre island preserve. The property is a cross section of a barrier island allowing us to explore the sound and salt marsh habitats, maritime forest, fresh water pond and the dunes and beach. The program serves public and private schools each school year and a 12-week summer day camp.

Join a staff of nine Sound to Sea Instructors to teach classes on the five major island habitats: the beach, maritime forest, freshwater pond, salt marsh and sound. Class topics vary from island ecology to coastal cultures and human impacts. Instructors utilize hands-on activities to teach a multidisciplinary curriculum, create programs and classes for diverse populations and are trained to work with and care for birds of prey and salt and fresh water aquariums and other education animals. Instructors have overnight duty one night every two weeks and will be trained in CPR/first aid. School year or year-round contracts available (most Instructors stay from one to two years). Compensation includes $285/week (with pay raises offered at the end of each season), plus private room and communal space, meals, medical insurance, and access to a private beach and sound side docks. SUWS of the Carolinas is located at the base of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina, approximately 45 minutes east of Asheville, two hours west of Charlotte, and four hours north of Atlanta. Base camp includes an office complex, training facilities, residential cabins for students, full shower house and laundry facility, and commissary.

Teach primitive outdoor skills (striking and bowdrill fire, simple traps, map and compass navigation, Leave no Trace camping, and backpacking) in the Pisgah National Forest. Facilitate wilderness therapy activities. Empower students to make healthy choices and become more self-reliant. Using the outdoors as an alternative to conventional treatment environments, SUWS Wilderness Field Instructors co-lead groups of adolescents in the backcountry, accounting for 24-hour safety and supervision. Work shifts are 8 days on and 6 days off. There is a $750 sign-on bonus, a $2,125 bonus for 6 shifts in first 90 days, and a $2,125 bonus for 12 shifts in first 180 days. Applicants must be at least 21 and have comfort in the backcountry and working with adolescents. A college degree is a plus; and WFR or WFA is recommended, but not required. Trails Momentum is a wilderness adventure therapy program designed exclusively for young adults ages 18-25 with depression, anxiety, technology addiction, academic struggles, and an overall lack of self-esteem.

With a private lake, comfortable amenities, and miles of surrounding national forest, the gorgeous 500-acre campus is nestled in the mountains of Western Carolina—the perfect setting to reflect and rebuild. Southeast regional data: 5,000+ miles of trails, 5,000+ climbing routes/boulder challenges, and many major whitewater rivers—all within a 1-4 hour drive from Trails Momentum's campus.

Trails Momentum is a wilderness adventure therapy program designed exclusively for struggling young adults, ages 18-25, who uncover their trail to success by overcoming new challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Field Instructors play an integral role in this process, mentoring students as they engage in various program elements such as group backpacking trips in the mountains, adventure expeditions (rock climbing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, fishing and paddle boarding), Base Camp activities (equine care, culinary skills, gardening, service learning and college courses), yoga and mindfulness practice to manage the distractions of every-day life, and classrooms that reignite a love of learning through hands-on fun. Compensation includes an hourly wage amounting to $2,400-$2,850 per shift, PTO for Lead Instructors, $1,000/year for training (such as Wilderness or Clinical First Responder), and health insurance coverage after 30 days. A 1-year commitment is necessary with a work shift rotation of 15 days with students (food and sleeping arrangements provided), followed by 13 days off to relax, travel, and adventure. Serving as a positive role model and influence for participants, Conference and Retreat Program Counselors interact with a diverse group of guests who come to YMCA Camp Harrison to enjoy the open-air beauty of nature, build relationships, challenge themselves as they learn new skills, and grow closer to God. Counselor responsibilities include leading and operating activities that includes an aerial adventure/ropes course that offers airborne challenges and elements of all kinds, an 11 lane auto belay climbing wall, water fun on a big swimming pool with 2 spiral slides and aquatic basketball as well as the 140-acre private lake (imagine water inflatables, stand up paddle boards, sunfish sail boats, canoes/kayaks, water zip line, and a blob!), paintball course, target sports and more. Compensation includes $400/week, staff housing, CPR/first aid certification, access to all Camp Harrison amenities, YMCA membership, the opportunity to attend the huge Merlefest music festival, and enjoying the surrounding beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Positions are available during the spring, summer and fall, with potential opportunity for multiple season work. Assistant Instructors

The North Carolina Outward Bound School is in search of individuals motivated to live, work, and play in the wilds of North Carolina! Individuals passionate about adventure, wilderness, and leadership education are highly encouraged to apply for the role of Assistant Instructor.

The Assistant Instructor position is an entry-level instructional role intended to prepare individuals for the Lead Instructor role. This is a full-time seasonal position intentionally scheduled on a variety of courses throughout the season in order to gain familiarity with the Outward Bound educational model and the many ways it is facilitated. Assistant Instructors can expect to be staffed on courses with backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater paddling, and ropes course components. The training and experience available through this position is a valuable step for anyone interested in a long-term career with Outward Bound or in the outdoor industry in general. Compensation includes a competitive per diem pay, housing, meals, access to pro deals, opportunities for top-notch trainings, access to program gear, and being part of a community of passionate, mission-driven people. If hired, candidates must be available for one of the following 2022 new staff trainings: March 15th–30th, April 26th–May 11th or May 12th–27th. Instructing work will begin following staff training and run consistently through September 30th. Instructors can expect 3-10 days off in between courses depending on scheduling needs, course load, or other factors. Field work is available into the fall and winter months for those interested.
